First Grade Measurement
Students in first grade begin measuring objects by repeatedly laying a unit length end to end and counting. They also compare relative sizes of objects with words such as longer, shorter, taller, and higher. They understand that when they lay the unit length end to end, there can be no gaps or overlaps.
First graders learn to tell time to the hour and half hour using digital and analog clocks.
Grade one students also display data using picture graphs. For example, students constructed this picture graph about types of shoes worn:
